Aphthous Stomatitis
Canker Sores
📋Overview
Aphthous stomatitis, commonly known as recurrent aphthous ulcers or canker sores, is a benign condition characterized by the repeated formation of small, painful ulcers on the mucous membranes inside the mouth. It is a distinct clinical entity from other oral ulcerations and is considered the most common cause of recurrent oral ulcers. The term 'aphthous stomatitis' is a legacy label; the modern preferred term is 'recurrent aphthous stomatitis' (RAS).
