📋Overview

Babesiosis is a tick-borne parasitic infection caused primarily by Babesia microti in the United States and other Babesia species worldwide. It is characterized by the invasion and destruction of red blood cells. Babesiosis is considered a malaria-like illness and is transmitted mainly through the bite of infected Ixodes ticks. The term 'babesiosis' is the modern preferred term; there are no widely used legacy or eponymous synonyms.
