Diverticulosis is a condition characterized by the presence of small pouches (diverticula) that form in the wall of the colon, most commonly in the sigmoid colon. It is considered a structural abnormality rather than an inflammatory disease. Diverticulosis is distinct from diverticulitis, which refers to inflammation or infection of these pouches. The term 'diverticulosis' is the modern preferred terminology.
