Ebola virus disease (EVD), formerly known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, is a severe viral illness caused by Ebola virus species. It is characterized by sudden onset of fever, severe weakness, muscle pain, and can progress to bleeding, organ failure, and death. Ebola is a zoonotic infection transmitted to humans from wild animals and spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. The term 'Ebola' is the modern preferred name for this condition.
