Wernicke encephalopathy is an acute neurological disorder caused by thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. It is a medical emergency characterized by a classic triad of symptoms including confusion, ataxia, and ophthalmoplegia. The term 'Wernicke encephalopathy' remains the preferred modern terminology. It is most commonly seen in individuals with chronic alcohol use disorder but can also occur in other conditions causing malnutrition or impaired thiamine absorption.
