Central State Hospital

Central State Hospital, located in Petersburg, Virginia, is a state-operated psychiatric hospital under the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS). Founded in 1870 as the Central Lunatic Asylum for Colored Insane, it holds historical significance as the first institution in the U.S. for African Americans with mental illness.
